Virginia Giuffre, the prominent accuser of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and Britain's Prince Andrew, has tragically died by suicide at the age of 41. Her family confirmed the devastating news on Friday, April 25, 2025, stating that she passed away at her farm in Western Australia, where she had resided for several years.
In a heartfelt statement, Giuffre's family expressed their profound grief, saying, "It is with utterly broken hearts that we announce that Virginia passed away last night at her farm in Western Australia. She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking." They described her as a "fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking" and "the light that lifted so many survivors." The family added, "In the end, the toll of abuse is so heavy that it became unbearable for Virginia to handle its weight."
Western Australia Police confirmed that they attended a property in Neergabby, a rural area near Perth, late on Friday night following a report of an unresponsive 41-year-old woman. Emergency services provided first aid, but sadly, she was declared deceased at the scene. While an investigation into her death is underway, police indicated that early findings suggest it is not suspicious.
Giuffre was a central figure in the legal battles against Epstein and his associates. She alleged that Epstein and his former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, trafficked her to Prince Andrew when she was 17. Prince Andrew has consistently denied these allegations. In 2021, Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against the Duke of York in New York, claiming sexual assault. The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2022, with Prince Andrew reportedly making a substantial donation to Giuffre's charity supporting victims of sexual abuse, though he did not admit liability.
Giuffre's accusations were instrumental in bringing the actions of Epstein and Maxwell to greater public attention. Maxwell was eventually convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in Epstein's sex trafficking network. Epstein himself died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
In the weeks leading up to her death, Giuffre had been involved in a car accident in Perth, where the vehicle she was in collided with a school bus. While initial reports suggested minor injuries, Giuffre later posted on social media about experiencing kidney failure and claimed she had only four days to live. However, her family subsequently stated that she did not intend for the post to become public, and local police disputed the severity of the initial crash.
Giuffre is survived by her three children, Christian, Noah, and Emily, who her family described as "the light of her life." Her passing marks a tragic end to the life of a woman who became a prominent voice for survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking, and her work in advocating for victims will be remembered. Her lawyer, Sigrid McCawley, described Giuffre as "much more than a client," calling her "a dear friend and an incredible champion for other victims" whose courage and strength were awe-inspiring.
