Among the deceased are a provincial governor and former Major League Baseball pitcher, Octavio Dotel, who tragically passed away en route to the hospital after being rescued from the rubble. Dotel, 51, was attending a concert by well-known merengue singer Rubby Pérez when the disaster struck, and his manager has confirmed he is one of the casualties. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday during Pérez's performance at the Jet Set nightclub, which was packed with hundreds of attendees. Approximately 400 rescuers are continuing their efforts to locate survivors amid the fear that the death toll may increase further. Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Centre (COE), expressed optimism that many people trapped beneath the fallen roof may still be alive. Jet Set is a renowned venue in Santo Domingo, frequently hosting dance music events, and was attended by various politicians, athletes, and notable figures during the concert. Included among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, governor of Monte Cristi province, as confirmed by President Luis Abinader.

She was the sister of former Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz. Dotel began his MLB career with the New York Mets in 1999 and played for several teams, including the Houston Astros and New York Yankees, until his retirement in 2013. Video footage from inside the nightclub captures patrons seated at tables and dancing as Pérez performs.

In a separate recording shared on social media, a man near the stage can be heard alerting others that "something fell from the ceiling," as he points towards it.

Moments later, a loud noise is heard, and the video cuts out while a woman shouts, "Dad, what's happened to you?" A band member from Rubby Pérez's group reported that the club was at full capacity when the incident occurred around 1 AM and initially thought it was an earthquake. Rubby Pérez's daughter has stated that her father was among those trapped under the debris. President Abinader has extended his condolences to the affected families during this time of sorrow.
