In 1992, the 1RAR Battalion Group was deployed to Somalia as part of Operation SOLACE, with the mission of securing the Humanitarian Relief Sector in Baidoa during a period marked by famine and civil war.

Through their remarkable courage, expertise, and profound compassion, coupled with an innovative approach to peacekeeping, they facilitated the safe distribution of humanitarian aid. Their efforts earned them the lasting respect of international aid organizations in the area and established a significant legacy for all subsequent Australian peacekeeping missions.

At that time, the Battalion was commanded by former Governor-General, the Honourable David Hurley AC CVO DSC (Retd). Yesterday, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, the Governor-General had the honor of serving as the Reviewing Officer during the presentation of the Meritorious Unit Citation for Operation SOLACE to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR).

In his address, the Governor-General recognized General Hurley's leadership and the lasting impact of the 1RAR Battalion Group's contributions in Somalia. He also paid tribute to Lance Corporal Shannon McAliney, who lost his life while serving in Somalia during Operation SOLACE, honoring his mother, Liz, who was present. "Recently, during my visit to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, I was reminded that since 1947, Australia has participated in peacekeeping missions every single day. This is a remarkable aspect of our nation's history and underscores the crucial role we have played in promoting peace and protecting civilians across the globe for nearly 80 years. Operation SOLACE is a significant chapter in that proud narrative."
