Thanks to the newly appointed Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Maud Page, curator Louise Halpin, and Kate Dowland from the NSW Department of Education, the Governor-General had the opportunity to tour Art Express 2025 and engage with four of the talented artists featured in the exhibition—Oscar, Katie, Luis, and Finn.

The artworks, inspired by personal experiences and created for the 2024 High School Certificate Visual Arts examination, are striking, insightful, and emotionally resonant.

Now in its 42nd year, Art Express honors the voices of young creatives, committed arts educators, and the rich diversity of the Australian experience by showcasing exceptional HSC works.

🖌� Oscar's piece delves into the effects of our increasingly digital lives and the disconnection from nature, merging traditional Australian landscape painting with digital 'glitches'.

🎨 Katie has depicted her closest school friends in vibrant hues, celebrating their uniqueness, the strength of friendship, and the influence of our nearest companions during pivotal moments in our lives.

📸 As a Sudanese Australian, Luis provides a compelling critique of racial profiling and societal judgment through his striking and provocative photography, compelling viewers to confront ingrained biases.

🧵 Finn explores fashion and textiles as significant means of self-expression and identity, influenced by our nearest loved ones and role models, narrating a story about who we are.

We extend our gratitude to the artists for generously sharing their work with us and congratulate all 50 artists featured in the exhibition.

Art Express will be on display at the NSW Art Gallery until April 27, with regional exhibitions continuing across New South Wales until October.
