The Traffic Unit is actively investigating a multi-vehicle accident that took place yesterday morning on Crowchild Trail S.W., which resulted in the tragic death of a teenager.

At approximately 8:18 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, our team responded to a collision in the northbound lanes of Crowchild Trail S.W., situated between 50 Avenue and Flanders Avenue S.W.

At that time, a white 2009 Lincoln MKX, operated by a 16-year-old male, was merging into the far-right northbound lane of Crowchild Trail S.W. from the 50 Avenue S.W. interchange.

Simultaneously, a white 2011 Lincoln MKX, driven by a 47-year-old man with a young child as a passenger, was traveling northbound in the adjacent lane.

As the 2009 Lincoln proceeded in the northbound lanes, the 2011 Lincoln changed lanes into the far-right lane, colliding with the 2009 Lincoln. This collision caused the 2009 Lincoln to veer onto the east shoulder of Crowchild Trail S.W., where it struck a large concrete base supporting a traffic sign.

The 2009 Lincoln sustained extensive damage and subsequently caught fire. The 16-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the 2011 Lincoln initially fled the scene but returned shortly thereafter. Both the driver and passenger of the 2011 Lincoln were unharmed.

Currently, speed is being examined as a potential contributing factor in the accident, while alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played a role.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses dashcam footage is encouraged to contact the police.
