Hazardous conditions have led to a special avalanche warning for the Central Rockies.

Avalanche Canada issued this alert late Thursday, encompassing Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, and Jasper National Parks, as well as Kananaskis Country. The agency cautioned that perilous conditions may also extend to surrounding areas.

This special public avalanche warning is effective until March 24, 2025.

According to the warning, "Recent storm snow has settled on a fragile snowpack structure, resulting in numerous significant avalanches over the past two weeks. Avalanches triggered on this layer have spread widely, even in forested regions, and may involve the full depth of the snowpack."

The warning also noted, "There have been multiple serious avalanche incidents during this period, including two fatalities. While natural avalanche activity is starting to decrease, the snowpack remains susceptible to human-triggered avalanches."

Avalanche Canada further indicated that slides could be triggered remotely, meaning they can be set off from a distance.
