Young individuals are significantly impacted by climate change and disparities in energy access.

Energy governance is crucial in defining the energy framework of the 21stcentury. Given the urgent issues of climate change, the transition to clean energy, and the pursuit of sustainable development, effective governance in this sector is vital. Unfortunately, conventional energy decision-making processes often lack inclusivity, neglecting the perspectives of those who will bear the consequences of current energy policies—the youth, in all their diversity.

Young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and energy inequities, which motivates them to seek solutions. Their innovative viewpoints and digital proficiency can revitalize traditional systems with much-needed energy and creativity.

Moreover, there is evidence of a significant skills gap in green technologies among young people, a key focus for this International Youth Day. This deficiency hinders their ability to participate in a workforce that is increasingly oriented towards a green economy and its governance. If current trends persist, it is estimated that by 2030, over 60 percent of young individuals may lack the essential skills required to thrive in a green economy.

By providing young people with the necessary technology, policy knowledge, and governance skills related to the energy transition, they can play a crucial role in developing innovative solutions and formulating effective energy policies. Their expertise and active participation can foster inclusive and progressive strategies, facilitating a smoother transition to a more equitable, cleaner, and resilient energy future.

Earlier this year, UNDP gathered experts to refine its energy governance initiatives. Recognizing the significance of youth involvement, UNDP is committed to supporting youth-led projects and has invited six young leaders to participate in the External Advisory Group on Energy Governance. By empowering them, UNDP aims to enhance the impact of youth in this critical area.
