UK TO IMPLEMENT SIGNIFICANT ONLINE CENSORSHIP—POTENTIAL FINES REACHING £18 MILLION FOR NON-COMPLIANCE

Ofcom, the regulatory authority for media in the UK, is set to enforce the Online Safety Act starting next week. This legislation mandates that social media platforms, search engines, and messaging applications swiftly eliminate "illegal" content.

These platforms are required to perform risk assessments, enhance their moderation practices, and ensure adherence to the law, or they may incur fines amounting to 10% of their global revenue.

This initiative grants regulators extensive authority to monitor online speech, with major websites being the initial focus of enforcement actions.

Ofcom has stated, "Any provider who fails can expect the full force of enforcement."

The UK's media regulator, Ofcom, has mandated that social media companies evaluate the risks associated with illegal content on their platforms by March 31, or they will face enforcement measures.

According to the Online Safety Act, firms such as Meta and TikTok are obligated to take decisive action against terrorism, hate speech, child exploitation, and fraud, or they risk incurring substantial penalties.
