Officials indicate that this federal funding will be distributed over three years, providing additional support to Alberta's existing school nutrition initiative.

According to the federal government, this agreement will help Alberta families with two school-aged children save approximately $800 a year on grocery expenses.

Notably, Alberta is the last province in Canada to join the national school food program launched by Ottawa, with Saskatchewan announcing its own agreement earlier today.

The three territories have already committed to the program, which was initially unveiled in April 2024.

In related news, Alberta's latest budget includes a proposal for an extra $20 million for the provincial school nutrition program.

This report by The Canadian Press was originally published on March 10, 2025.
