Several employees of Mark Zuckerberg's Meta were fired for abusing the company's $25 (£19) meal plan to purchase toiletries and laundry detergent.

Employees at the company's Los Angeles office reported that over 30 employees were fired when it was discovered that they frequently used takeout credits to purchase groceries and makeup.

Posts on the anonymous messaging app Blind claim that high-paid engineers with six-figure incomes were among those fired.

At its biggest locations, Meta, which is presently valued at $1.5 trillion, offers free breakfast, lunch, and dinner to its employees.

Employees in smaller offices without staff canteens are given coupons for delivery services like Grubhub, which they may use to place meal orders while at work.

But Meta just found out that Some workers were placing orders for household goods from stores that were featured on the apps using the $25 vouchers.

According to the Financial Times, employees were occasionally utilizing the program to purchase laundry detergent and wine glasses.

Free office food has long been provided by Meta and other Silicon Valley businesses in an effort to entice employees to come into work rather than work from home. In the case of breakfast and dinner, this is done to promote longer workdays.

Employees who persisted in abusing the lunch coupon program were fired last week after first receiving warnings about it.

The announcement coincided with Meta's Wednesday layoffs of more employees across its virtual reality division, Instagram, and WhatsApp The business announced that it was reorganizing several departments and relocating some employees.

The major layoffs in 2022 and 2023, when Meta laid off tens of thousands of employees in what Mr. Zuckerberg referred to as a "efficiency" drive, are thought to be more extensive than the redundancies.

A representative for Meta stated: "A few teams at Meta are making adjustments today to make sure resources are in line with their location plan and long-term strategic goals.

This entails relocating certain teams and assigning some workers to different positions. When a position like this is abolished, we make a concerted effort to provide affected employees alternative employment options.

In recent years, Meta has reduced the benefits offered to employees to entice them to work in the office eliminating perks like laundry services and "to-go" boxes that let workers take food home.
