A young Fernie, British Columbia recording artist who collaborated with the Flaming Lips has passed away.


Earlier this week, Nell Smith's family acknowledged her passing on social media with a post that opens


"It pains us so much to say that our feisty, talented, unique, beautiful daughter was cruelly taken from us on Saturday night," the caption on Instagram stated.


"The news has left us speechless and unsure of how to respond.


"We are thankful that she was able to experience so much in her 17 years, but she still had so much more to experience and give this world." She has irrevocably changed the world and shattered a hole in our hearts."


Smith released a nine-track CD titled "Where At thirteen, The Viaduct Looms with the Flaming Lips.


Nick Cave song covers were on the album.


States the billboard (opens in a new tab) Frontman Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips announced to a crowd on Sunday that Smith had passed away in a vehicle crash.


Tonight, we must deliver a very terrible announcement. Nell is our acquaintance who is from Canada. Three years ago, we collaborated with her to record an incredible CD featuring mostly Nick Cave songs. She was murdered in a car accident last night, according to Coyne, who spoke to Billboard. "We have some very sad messages today," the source said.


"We are reminded once again of the power of music and how encouraging it can be to be around people that you love." Smith was prepared to release a Kickstarter-funded debut solo album in 2025, according to Billboard as well.


Smith's family concluded the Instagram post with the following message: "Please leave us to work through things for the time being, and hold your kids extra tight tonight. When we need you, we'll yell."
