Statement from AHS Interim President and CEO Andre Tremblay:

In September 2024, AHS approved modifications to the food supply process in our emergency departments and other non-inpatient areas, with an intended implementation date of April 1, 2025.

Following media coverage, the Minister of Health expressed concerns regarding the execution of this policy and requested that I investigate claims suggesting that food and beverages may not have been accessible to patients.

The intention behind the proposed policy was not to deny patients food. Instead, it aimed to alter the methods of food storage and delivery to minimize waste occurring within our hospitals.

Upon reviewing this policy, which was introduced before my tenure at AHS, and after considering feedback from healthcare professionals, I have decided that AHS will not proceed with these changes.

We are troubled by the misunderstanding surrounding this proposed policy and are currently investigating reports indicating that food and beverages may not have been provided to patients.

Our commitment remains to deliver high-quality care to all Albertans whenever and wherever it is needed.

This situation should have been avoided initially, and I would like to acknowledge Calgary mom Amanda Moppett-Beatch and all those who raised their voices on this matter.
