ITALY'S PLAN FOR MIGRATION: A PATH TO ALBANIA HAS SPEEDBUMPS.
Even if judges have temporarily grounded Italy's proposal to send asylum seekers to prison centres in Albania, which are now as empty as a Monday gym, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is sticking to her plan. Only male asylum applicants from a list of secure countries are included by the proposal, which is intended to discourage immigration from Africa. Deportation is accelerated since their applications are handled quickly (read: largely denied). Italy was obliged by courts to repatriate the first detainees, but Meloni maintains that the strategy would succeed and cites "strong support" from the EU. The EU Court of Justice will now have to determine whether or not this detour is lawful. Reuters is the source.
