KEY BACKGROUND
Giuliani was one of Trump's main mouthpieces to spread rumors of election fraud after the 2020 election in which Trump lost to President Joe Biden. He repeatedly made unproven claims about fraud, said the election was stolen from Trump and filed suit in Pennsylvania alleging Democrats in the state participated in a nationwide conspiracy to help Biden win the election. Giuliani also faced repercussions for his support of Trump's 2020 claims when he was sued for defamation by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, two voting machine companies, and was ordered to pay $148 million in damages to election workers in Georgia he falsely accused of election fraud. Giuliani declared bankruptcy shortly after that ruling.
