The Governor-General has conveyed a message from His Majesty The King to the Australian Veterans of the Second World War in honor of the 80th anniversary of the war's conclusion.

"As we near the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, I wish to express my deep admiration and gratitude for your selfless service during those challenging and perilous times. The passage of time has not diminished the remarkable acts of bravery from those who sacrificed so much for the cause of peace, freedom, and justice. "For many years, you have carried the memories of that tragic conflict and mourned those who lost their lives in service to our country. I am consistently moved by the love and pride veterans hold for their fallen comrades and family members, and I recognize that few days pass without thoughts of them. The reality that the resting places of the fallen are often far from home is a heavy burden to bear. "We must all remain vigilant in upholding the values for which you fought so valiantly more than eighty years ago. Like many in my generation, I owe my peaceful upbringing to the unwavering dedication of you and your fellow comrades who stood against tyranny. For this, I am profoundly grateful. "On Anzac Day, as we commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, I wish to extend a special tribute to both Australian and New Zealand veterans and those currently in active service.
