Prime Minister Mark Carney reported that he had a discussion on Sunday with his U.K. counterpart regarding the repercussions of the United States' global tariff initiative.

According to a statement from Carney's office, he and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the "unjustified trade actions" taken by the United States and emphasized the importance of enhancing trade relations between Canada and the U.K.

In a post on social media, Carney remarked that "alliances with longstanding, dependable partners are more crucial than ever" at this time.

This dialogue occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump implemented a series of "reciprocal" tariffs on various countries, claiming they were necessary to combat unfair trade practices.

This decision resulted in a significant decline in stock markets globally as the weekend approached.

The statement also indicated that Carney and Starmer discussed their countries' shared support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, and both leaders agreed to maintain ongoing communication.
