Over the past week, as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred has affected communities in Queensland and New South Wales, the Governor-General has reached out to local mayors, members of the Australian Defence Force, SES emergency service workers, and dedicated volunteers from the Red Cross and St John Ambulance to offer support and express heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all Australians.

Today, the Governor-General visited @nemagovau in Canberra. NEMA plays a crucial role in coordinating the national emergency assistance response alongside those in the impacted areas and investing in emergency response capabilities. The Governor-General was briefed by Joe Buffone PSM, Dr. Jill Charker, and the Bureau of Meteorology on the effects of the heavy rainfall and strong winds resulting from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Our thoughts remain with the communities and volunteers who are bravely supporting one another on the ground—especially in the Lockyer Valley region where severe weather continues to challenge residents and those who are in the process of recovering.

In times of struggle, we witness the true spirit of Australians coming together, relentlessly working to care for each other in the most impressive ways.
