Parental rights policies are violated by the Edmonton school board and teachers union.

By opposing a number of parental rights initiatives, the Edmonton Public School Board is preparing for conflict with Alberta parents and Premier Danielle Smith's administration sports and education. One significant change from the current policy is the ability for parents to choose not to have their children participate in classes that teach gender identity and sexual orientation. Parents will now need to provide their consent.

According to the motion of the school board, this must be reversed right away.

The motion states that "it is a long-standing practice that works to allow parents/guardians to opt out of sexual education." "The procedure is open and considerate of both parental preference and the welfare of the students. Numerous studies demonstrate that providing sexual health education encourages safer sexual behaviour, lowers the rate of STDs, and lowers the number of teen pregnancies.

But none of the legislation in Alberta would do away with sexual education. Simply put, parents would have more control over the type of sexual education children learn about.

John Hilton-O'Brien, executive director of Parents for Choice in Education, questioned the "evidence" presented in the EPSB's motion, claiming that it mostly relied on polls, which are insufficient to demonstrate cause and effect. He claimed that the Cass study, which Smith had once referred to as "the most comprehensive review of the medical literature and the science behind" the effects of transitioning on youngsters, had "destroyed" the data presented.

He added that the school board had a basic misunderstanding of children's right to privacy. According to him, they are claiming that the parents are infringing on their child's right to privacy and that they, as bureaucrats, are entitled to use that right. In actuality, though, parents have the right to privacy, which is in opposition to the state.

They are flipping.

On Tuesday, the school board passed a motion that criticized parents' rights to know about their children's use of different pronouns in class and to have more control over sex education.

The laws "would be some of the most extreme anti-trans and anti-2SLGBTQ policies, not only in Canada, but in the world," according to Senator Kristopher Wells, who was mentioned in the motion.

The regulations give young people in healthcare more protection the concept of human rights entirely upside down," Hilton-O'Brien stated.

"Despite having over a billion dollars, these guys are unable to come to terms with their situation. They were unable to come up with a compelling reaction to this legislation. "This is blatant ineptitude," he continued.

He did acknowledge the shortcomings of the proposed legislation, though. He said that it was roughly 91.5% accurate and comparable to Smith's leadership review.

The fact that the education minister would now need to authorize instructional materials or outside speakers for subjects pertaining to gender identity, sexual orientation, or human sexuality was one of his worries. Another claimed that if one student requested a Gay-Straight Alliance, schools would be compelled to create one.

According to Hilton-O'Brien, each of these
Policies could conflict with the teaching philosophies of religious schools.

Kellie Lynn Pirie, the founder of DeTrans Alliance Canada, told True North that she wished such policies had been in place when she was a young person in danger.

"A child's social transition is not a neutral process. According to Lynn Pirie, who echoed Smith's earlier claims that the transition rate from social to literal is nearly 100%, "the majority of youth who socially transition go onto hormones and surgery."

"Schools can no longer start a child's gender transition process without telling their parents thanks to Premier Smith's new policies," Lynn Pirie continued. Additionally, minors cannot obtain a driver's license without their parents' approval. Young persons are subject to reasonable limitations.

According to Lynn Pirie, kids bear the the cost of learning that one can be "born in the wrong body."

"A kinder, gentler, more compassionate approach to youth who are different, gender non-conforming, or distressed will be encouraged by the policies," she stated. "No child should be told that their behaviour is so flawed that it can only be corrected by medication and surgery."

According to the motion, other school divisions have taken inspiration from the EPSB's excellent policies regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. According to the board, Smith failed to notify them of the opt-in change prior to its execution.

Demetrios Nicolaides, Alberta's minister of education, told True North that the changes are in response to parent pleas for greater involvement in the schooling of their child.

"To get their advice and guidance, our team has spoken with school boards, teachers, superintendents, parents, and other partners," he stated. In order to make sure the appropriate services are accessible where and when they are needed, we will keep in touch with our stakeholders during the implementation of these rules, should the proposed legislation pass.
