Free and fair elections, overseen by an independent electoral commission, are fundamental to our democratic system.

After the prorogation of Parliament and the dissolution of the House of Representatives on Friday, the Governor-General reached out to the Governors of each State, requesting them to issue writs for the election of Senators in their respective states.

Today, the Governor-General hosted Acting Electoral Commissioner Jeff Pope APM and Chief Legal Officer Andrew Johnson from the Australian Electoral Commission at Government House to discuss the electoral process. The Federal Executive Council, which includes @senator.farrell and @andrewleighmp, subsequently convened to provide advice to the Governor-General regarding the issuance of writs for the elections of the House of Representatives and for Senators in the ACT and NT. The Governor-General approved and signed these writs.

Following this meeting, the Governor-General presented the signed writs to the Electoral Commissioner for his endorsement and further action, with the expectation that they will be returned once the election results are finalized.

🗳� Australian citizens are reminded to ensure they are properly enrolled with the Australian Electoral Commission by 8 PM local time on Monday, April 7, 2025, in order to participate in the federal election.
