I always make time for a friend.

Earlier this week, I seized the opportunity to meet with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew while in Winnipeg.

Wab, along with New Democrats nationwide, is dedicated to fostering a future in which all individuals can prosper. This includes defending universal health care, establishing access to affordable housing, and standing up against corporate greed. These are causes we can all support.

Let us continue to advocate for these issues together.

In the vast, untamed landscapes of the Northwest Territories, a unique partnership thrives between the land and its people. Here, the Indigenous Inuvialuit herders safeguard Canada's last wild reindeer herd, a living link to the region's rich cultural heritage and ecological balance. Their dedication goes beyond simple animal husbandry; it's a profound commitment to building a sustainable future for their community.

Through traditional knowledge passed down through generations, combined with modern techniques, these herders strive to maintain the health and well-being of the herd, ensuring its continued freedom and contributing to the long-term prosperity of the Inuvialuit people. This delicate balance between tradition and innovation reflects a deep respect for the land and a vision for a future where both culture and environment can flourish.

Discover more about the wildfires and related issues in the Northwest Territories (NWT). Enchanting NWT: A reindeer stands amidst the barren, stunning landscape of the NWT. Santa's reindeer are real—and they reside in the Northwest Territories.

The only reindeer herd in Canada is found in the Northwest Territories, not far from the North Pole. While our beloved Prancer and Blitzen only spend one night a year pulling Santa's sleigh, these magnificent animals can be admired year-round. Here are some key facts about the reindeer of the Northwest Territories: A Historic Herd: Domesticated reindeer have been herded in the Mackenzie Delta for over 80 years. The journey began in 1935 when they were introduced from Alaska to address a local caribou shortage. Unique Creatures: Now numbering in the thousands, these reindeer are the only free-ranging herd in Canada. They play a vital role in the Arctic ecosystem and hold cultural significance for the Inuvialuit people.

Ongoing revitalization projects in the Western Arctic aim to increase the herd's population, promising a bright future for these majestic animals as a sustainable food source and as distinctive inhabitants of the Arctic landscape. Cozy in the Cold: A reindeer's hide is specially designed to trap air, providing insulation in temperatures as low as -60 degrees Celsius. This insulating layer also enhances buoyancy, aiding in swimming across icy rivers. Cousins to Caribou: Reindeer and caribou share the same scientific name, Rangifer tarandus. However, due to domestication, reindeer tend to be smaller, more sociable, and tamer than their wild cousins. Snowshoe Adaptation: Reindeer hooves serve multiple functions, perfectly adapted for survival in polar environments. They act like snowshoes with their broad, splayed toes to navigate snowy terrain. They also function like chisels, allowing reindeer to dig for food beneath the ice (the term "caribou" originates from the French word for snow shoveler). Additionally, their hooves help them swim efficiently. Incredible Speed: When at full speed, reindeer can run over 70 kilometers per hour. Not only are they sprinters, but they are also impressive endurance athletes, often traveling more than 5,000 kilometers annually.

Extraordinary Vision: Reindeer are unique among mammals for their ability to see ultraviolet light, giving them a distinct advantage in the glaring white expanses of the Arctic. Annual Migration: Every spring, typically in early April, the herd migrates toward Inuvik as they move from their wintering grounds near Jimmy Lake to their calving grounds on Richards Island, close to Tuktoyaktuk.

A Popular Event: Recently, the herd's crossing has gained popularity among locals and visitors, often coinciding with Inuvik's vibrant Muskrat Jamboree. These reindeer of the Northwest Territories are both enchanting and very real, sure to bring warmth to your heart any time of year.

I view it as a significant advancement that there are federal partners in Canada who support increased autonomy and a structure to restrict federal spending in areas under provincial jurisdiction Danielle Smith said formerly on social media.. This is particularly noteworthy given the historical collaboration between Quebec and Alberta, and we will persist in our joint efforts to promote the autonomy of the various provinces.

I had the pleasure of attending B'nai Brith Canada Calgary's 72nd Annual charity dinner last night, where I was honored alongside former Canadian ambassador to Israel, Vivian Bercovici. This event supports disabled veterans and the Arthur J. E. Child Cancer Centre. For over 70 years, B'nai Brith Calgary has been dedicated to uplifting local organizations, thereby enhancing the lives of families and communities across our province. I extend my gratitude for all your efforts.

Business / Canada's relationship with the...

In recent months, Canada's relationship with the United States has undergone significant changes.
FB_IMG_1743698309751.jpg
We have been on edge, anxious about whether the U.S. would uphold its trade agreements and maintain the cherished ties of friendship and alliance that we've built over the years. Yet, we didn't remain passive. We united as a nation and province like never before. Various industries stepped forward, willingly accepting retaliatory tariffs, even at their own expense, prioritizing the country over individual interests. That's the essence of being Canadian, and it will forever remain. Today, many Canadians are taking a moment to breathe. While it seems Canada may not face the worst-case scenario regarding tariffs, thousands of Nova Scotians will still feel the effects. I also want to acknowledge the toll this situation has taken on businesses and individuals. The stress and uncertainty have significantly impacted the mental health of Canadians, with many Nova Scotians feeling drained by this instability.

Please know that we are here for you. We are committed to doing whatever is necessary to support you. You have done nothing wrong. As we look ahead, the influence of U.S. trade policies will still resonate. Our efforts to diversify markets will intensify. We will collaborate with those affected, individually and through broader programs, as needed. This may involve loans, grants, or support for diversification—whatever is needed to find the best solutions for your situation. During this uncertain time, our initial non-tariff retaliatory measures will stay in effect. This means we will continue to prioritize Nova Scotia and Canadian businesses by reviewing and canceling non-essential contracts with U.S. suppliers. The increased tolls at the Cobequid Pass for commercial vehicles from the U.S. will remain in place.

American alcohol will also continue to be absent from the shelves of the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. stores. One key takeaway from this experience is clear: relying too heavily on a single source is unwise. Consequently, we will strive to enhance Nova Scotia's self-reliance. To achieve this, we will tap into our rich natural resources. By leveraging our resource wealth, we can secure both our province's energy and economic future. We will persist in leading the charge to eliminate interprovincial trade barriers. We have enacted a groundbreaking law aimed at dismantling internal trade obstacles and enhancing labor mobility. I expect other provinces to join us in the coming weeks. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to Prime Minister Carney for his leadership during this challenging time for our country and its people. Canadians are patient, but the "governor" jokes and "51st state" references became tiresome and frustrating. Your approach appears to be effective, as these derogatory comments have diminished. Thank you. I remain devoted to Team Canada and the people of Nova Scotia. We will be prepared for whatever developments arise in this relationship. I believe that the strength of our long-standing friendship with the U.S. will ultimately endure. It has withstood wars, recessions, and pandemics, and it will weather this administration as well. We are stronger as a nation when we stand united. As always, I am committed to you and your family.

Barcelona triumphed over Atletico Madrid to secure a place in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid.

The Catalan club will compete in an El Clasico final after achieving a 5-4 aggregate victory over Atletico. Inigo Martinez Berridi, a Spanish defender for Barcelona, and his teammates celebrated their success at the conclusion of the semi-final second leg held at Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on April 2, 2025.

On that day, Barcelona clinched a 1-0 victory against Atletico Madrid, marking their first appearance in the Copa del Rey final in four years. Ferran Torres netted the decisive goal in the first half, allowing Barcelona to progress with a 5-4 aggregate score following a thrilling 4-4 draw in the first leg in February.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid also advanced by defeating Real Sociedad in extra time on Tuesday, matching Barcelona's aggregate score of 5-4. This final will be the first encounter between the two rivals in the Copa del Rey since the 2013-14 season, when Madrid claimed the title.

During my discussion with Chancellor Scholz this morning, we reached a consensus on enhancing the multifaceted trade relationship between Canada and Germany.

In light of the challenges posed by President Trump's tariffs, having dependable trade partners has become increasingly vital.
