Between 2010 and 2024, the UK Home Office recorded a total of 22,619 asylum requests from Nigerian citizens, placing Nigeria 11th on the list of countries with the highest asylum applications.
In 2024, there were 2,841 applications from Nigerians, nearly twice the number recorded in 2023. Analysts attribute this increase to factors such as insecurity, economic difficulties, and political oppression in Nigeria.
Currently, Nigerians represent one in every 30 asylum claims in the UK. Experts express concern over a growing brain drain, as many skilled workers are choosing to remain abroad permanently.
