The Oceans Protection Plan (OPP) represents Canada's commitment to safeguarding its coastlines and waterways for the benefit of future generations.
As part of the OPP, scientists from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) collect and analyze data regarding wildlife, habitats, and the effects of pollution on various ecosystems. This research equips our specialists with the latest insights and information necessary for addressing environmental emergencies.
Safeguarding Canada's Oceans and Shorelines
Our support during environmental emergencies encompasses:
- Identifying critical environmental assets, including wildlife and vulnerable ecosystems
- Offering site-specific weather forecasts and trajectory modeling to predict the movement of spilled substances in water
- Providing guidance on minimizing environmental harm and managing the cleanup of hazardous materials
We work in partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, along with other governmental bodies, industry stakeholders, and coastal populations to refine this guidance.
