This is a betrayal.

LaVar Payne, the former Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat, is involved in an initiative aimed at initiating direct discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the future of Alberta. He is also advocating for a provincial independence referendum to be conducted this year.

Payne is among those scheduled to attend a press conference today in Calgary to unveil the "Delegation to Washington" project. This initiative seeks to gauge the level of support in Washington, D.C. for either an economic union or statehood for an independent Alberta, as stated in a press release.

The release mentions that a set of nine issues recently presented by Premier Danielle Smith after her meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney last week has nearly ensured that an independence referendum will occur in Alberta within this calendar year.

Simultaneously, Smith, who also serves as a local MLA, suggested in a statement to the News that these issues could be resolved swiftly, contingent upon the results of the ongoing federal election. While her government does not intend to unilaterally conduct such a vote, she noted that it could happen if there is sufficient support that meets the relatively high criteria for certification as a citizen-led referendum.
